Boko Haram Plans To Bomb Apapa Seaport- Police

Western Ports Command of the Nigeria Police has raised the alarm over threat by the Boko Haram sect to bomb Lagos, with the nation’s seaport in Apapa as its likely target, Tribune reports. Commissioner of Police in charge of the Western Ports Command, Mrs Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison stated this at the inauguration of new executives of the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) in Apapa, Lagos.

She stated that based on intelligence report it received three months ago, the deadly Islamic sect could be planning to bomb Lagos and possibly target the seaport. “We are not taking the threat lightly at all and we encourage all stakeholders who visit the port to keep their eyes and ears open in case of the activity of the sect,” said Ibifuro-Harisson who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of administration, Salem Machree.

She said as part of measures put in place to check the threat, the Police had beefed up security within and around Lagos including the port environment, just as she disclosed that Police would remain alert and vigilant at ensuring that the violent sect did not hit the ports.

It will be recalled that at least four persons were confirmed dead, when two explosions suspected to have emanated from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off near the Folawiyo Energy Depot on Creek Road, Apapa on June 25 this year.

We Will Soon Know The Sponsors Of Boko Haram- Ali Modu Sheriff.

Former Governor of Borno State, Senator (Dr,) Ali Modu Sheriff, is a politician with intimidating political profile. He was elected three times as Senator representing Borno Central at the upper chamber of the National Assembly. He was equally elected twice as Governor of Borno state and fathered many politicians. Senator Ali Sheriff is currently running his businesses in the Oil and Gas sector as well as Aviation and has been in the news over the Boko Haram menace that has taken over the Northeast. In this interview with DAILY POST, the former governor spoke on his recent home coming to Maiduguri, why he is now in PDP and his dreams for Borno state. Our correspondent, MAINA MAINA sent excerpt:
Maiduguri, the Borno state capital practically stood still on Sunday, when you arrived the town. This has also questioned an initial rumour that you have left
PDP . Now that you have proved your critics wrong again, may we know your mission on why you are back in Maiduguri?
Thank you very much. I am indeed happy that each time they try to fool the people of Borno state, God in his mercies always bring shame on them by proving them wrong. Well, I am here this time around in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state to tell my people that I have formally dumped the All Progressive Congress, APC to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. I pity those pedaling lies about me. My people must have heard a lot of stories, but they did not hear it officially from me. I am also here to encourage them to go and register with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. This is where we have pitched our tent, in other to be in conformity with the central government for the benefit of our people. Basically, this is my mission to Maiduguri.
Well, Sir, you have been a consistent politician. I mean you have identified with one political party since time immemorial; you have always been in the, perhaps because historically, Borno state has always been an opposition state; what informed this sudden shift?
You are very correct. I am a consistent politician and I remained with one political party all through my political journey till now. I was a founding member of the NRC and I remain with the party despite that fact that we lost election at that time. I was a member of the APP. In fact, we brought the party to the state and we formed the government. From APP we metamorphosed to ANPP. All the parties we formed were based on principles of democratic representation and good governance. The need came when we had to take certain decisions, as a political party, we agreed to go into merger with the idea to make us strong and position ourselves as formidable opposition in the country. Thus, we formed what is now known as the All Progressive Congress, APC, but unfortunately, the party did not go far when it was hit by greed and selfishness as against our principles. We were thinking about fairness, equity and justice, but all these were not found in APC, as such, we had to take a decision, which informed our thinking to take our state to conform with the central government.
I am not into politics today for myself. I am into politics today for my people and for the benefit of the people I represent, that is, the people of Borno state. Today, you and I know that if there is one state that had suffered a lot in terms of insurgency, it’s Borno state. You and I know very well that all the security agencies under our constitution belong to the central government, which President Goodluck Jonathan is the Commander in Chief. As a politician, the President coming through a political party, which formed government at the centre owes his party and the states which formed government under his party. The President has his people, who would tell him what should be done to their states; they always would have his attention because they belong to the same clime. Whether what they would tell him is right or wrong, he must hear them. Now, Borno state people are suffering, and I know that, certain things are achievable only when you belong to the central government, and if it would take me to join the mainstream political party in order to go and fight for my people, I think my decision to join the PDP has been justified. In any case, Borno state is losing each time we are in opposition. Every time we are in the opposition, we do not benefit in terms of dividends of democracy like states under the PDP. This is because it is natural that the central government would have to satisfy those states that voted them in. If we are not going to assists the central government to form a government, then, they are not duty bound to bring the dividends of democracy to us. Of course, to provide security to protect lives and property is their responsibility, but we would be in a better position to get their attention if we are part of the central government. I can say that the totality of my reason for joining the PDP is to bridge that gap between the people of Borno state and the central government.

Sultan, Oritsejafor Disagree Over Boko Haram

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, on Monday openly disagreed on the continued violence being unleashed on parts of the country by Boko Haram.

While Abubakar said Islamic leaders had “tried so much” to preach against the activities of the sect, Oritsejafor said they had not done enough in reaching out to the insurgents and making them understand the true teachings of Islam.

The two religious leaders spoke at a round-table meeting with special advisers on religious affairs from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The programme, which was declared open by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, was organised by the Offices of the Senior Special Assistants to the President on Islamic and Christian matters.

It had “Toward synergising and interfacing in the religious sector for national development” as its theme.

Abubakar, who is also the leader of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, had in his remarks said there was no problem between Islam and Christianity. He argued that if there was any problem between Christians and Muslims, such matter should be dealt with at that level.

He heaped the blame on what he described as lack of education about religions which breeds lack of trust and sincerity.

The Sultan regretted that while Islamic leaders had continued to condemn the insurgents, they were still being accused of not doing enough.

This, he said, was not fair to the religious leaders.

He said he had personally gone across the globe to preach peace and uphold the fact that there was no problem between adherents of Islam and Christianity.

In his quest for peaceful relationship between the followers of the two religions, the Sultan said he had written two separate lengthy letters to the   Pope and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

He said when people were asking Islamic leaders to sit with insurgents and discuss, they fail to note that the current situation could not be compared to the activities of militants in the Niger Delta.

Abubakar said, “In a situation where Muslim leaders condemn insurgents and they will still be told they have not done enough. That is not fair.

“We don’t tell ourselves the truth. Followers are not telling the leaders the truth, and the leaders will think they are doing the right things.

“If the governor in Sokoto is told that he should sponsor four people to Christian pilgrimage, so be it. It is government’s fund. If a land is needed in Kano for a church, they should get it after following the due process.

“Muslim leaders have tried so much. I have gone across the globe to say that there is no problem between Islam and Christianity.

“We wrote to the Pope, the document is titled the Common World – published in 2010. He replied us and since that time, we have been having meetings.

“We also wrote to the ISIS to tell them that they should not continue to do what they are doing in the name of Islam. If we read those documents we must trust what we have said.

“If we don’t trust one another, we cannot move forward. If we say one thing here and go back to our states to do other things, we have wasted our time and resources.”

“Followers should stop telling the leaders what they want to hear. We wrote a letter to the President on what to do to end the scourge about two years ago.”

He said members of the council had not been able to meet in the last one and a half years because of insecurity.

The Sultan alleged that while they decided to move an earlier meeting fixed for Gombe State to Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation failed to release funds to them.

He said like every other Nigerians, Islamic leaders also feel the pain of insurgency because   one life lost, especially to insurgency, meant a lot to them.

Mohammed reiterated his position that the insurgents were not committing the atrocities in the name of Islam.

The Sultan advised that as the 2015 general elections approach,   politicians should carry out their campaigns without reference to candidates’ religious or ethnic background or colour.

Oritsejafor, in his reaction, commended Abubakar for writing the ISIS, saying he had not heard about the letter before.

He however called on the Sultan to also write another letter to the Boko Haram, which according to him, had killed more people than the ISIS.

The CAN President said since Boko Haram members have clerics they listen to, Islamic leaders must find a way of reaching out to them and present the teachings of true Islam to them.

Oritsejafor said the insurgents would not listen to him but would rather kill him fast if he dared to reach out to them.

He said, “His Eminence said he wrote a letter to the   ISIS. I have to truly congratulate you for that because that was a very good move. I didn’t know about it until now and I am so glad it happened.

“But I want to appeal that you also write to Boko Haram because Boko Haram is worse than the ISIS. They have killed more people than the ISIS, they have caused more atrocities than the ISIS, they need to be written to as well, it is very important; it will help.

“I have made an appeal several times that there are some of our leaders who must come together: religious, political and traditional. They must come and discuss.

“I have been told that Boko Haram members , to a very large extent, are very vast in scriptures. What scriptures do they use?

“There are still religious clerics that they respect. If these people are not presenting the right thing and are misrepresenting Islam, which I agree it is so to a very large extent, we agree that our brothers should reach out to them so that the real Islam can be presented to them.

“They won’t listen to me, in fact, they will kill me faster than anything else if I go to them, oh yes, that is the truth.   I am aware of that. In fact, as I speak, I know what is going on around me all the time, so I know.”

While admitting that insurgents also kill Muslims, Oritsejafor said Muslims fall victims to the sect for two reasons.

According to him, Muslims who are killed are those who disagree with the sect’s ideology or those who refuse to work with them by giving information.

He described as painful and disheartening, a situation where all churches in Mubi in Adamawa State and other places had been levelled.

He also decried a situation where a state governor would vow that he would not use government money to sponsor adherents of a particular religion on pilgrimage.

The CAN leader said it was not enough for religious leaders to say sweet things, they must   match their words with actions.

He continued, “The problem with gatherings like this is that if we are not careful, it becomes an occasion for goodphotographs, shaking of hands and   talking very nicely.

“We don’t want to offend each other. Please let us offend each other, we need to. Because if we don’t offend each other, we will not tell each other the truth and that is part of Nigeria’s problems.

“If you come out to say certain things, there are those who feel you are rocking the boat but God is in the boat, the boat will not sink.

“Let us talk to each other, let us tell the truth to each other, let us not sweep it under the carpet.

“It is true that Islam and Christianity have no problem. I am glad you (Sultan) said there could be problem between Christians and Muslims.

“Why should a church in the North for the past 30 years not get a Certificate of Occupancy? Any mosque or church in any part of the country should be able to get C of O.

“Why is it that people will want to build a place of worship in a particular part of the country and they will not get land?

“We must create a level playing field for everybody; we   must deal with everybody equally.’’

Sambo, who represented Jonathan said religion, as a guide for mankind, must be applied as a guiding light against the backdrop of all the problems confronting the nation.

“We are working round-the-clock to transform all facets of our socio-economic and political lives.

“Let me reiterate that we remain resolute in our quest to provide positive development to Nigerians anchored on peace and harmony. We equally remain unwavering in our commitment to bringing an end to the security challenges confronting our dear nation.

“It is worthy of note to state that the threats posed by senseless insurgents who masquerade themselves under the guise and toga of religion to perpetrate their lawless acts will not in any way distract us from our quest to positively transform the lives of Nigerians.

“Our transformation agenda has positively impacted on the lives of Nigerians and we are committed to the continuous delivery of democratic dividends and good governance to our people.”

“I urge us all to live according to the noble tenets and dictates of our religions. We should continue to assist government with prayers and positive counselling and desist from making inciting statements and comments capable of causing disharmony and breach of the peace.

“It should be noted that, by the teaching of our faiths, we shall all account for our deeds in the hereafter. I therefore admonish you to live by example always and to do good for the development of our country and humanity.”

Defend yourself against boko haram - Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has advised Nigerians not to rely on the military in the fight against boko haram. The Emir of Kano, has voiced support for vigilantes fighting Boko Haram, urging others to form civilian militias while questioning the competence of the military.

The comments were made by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who became emir earlier this year after being sacked from his post as the central bank governor, where he was one of the government’s most high-profile critics. It is extremely rare for Nigeria’s clerics to speak explicitly about political and military affairs, but many expected Sanusi to defy convention and inject himself into public debate after assuming the highly influential post.

He said “People should be sensitised on the importance of being on the alert and they should prepare, they should acquire what they will defend themselves with." The Emir said this during Friday prayers at the central mosque in Kano, the largest city in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north.

AFP obtained a copy of the transcript of the recording on Monday. While Sanusi did not mention Boko Haram by name, it was clear he was discussing efforts to resist the Islamist rebels. “Those that are endowed as hunters and vigilantes should apply this endowment given to them by Allah as an avenue of earning divine reward in defending their nation,” he said.

Nigeria’s military has been cooperating with various vigilante forces in the northeast for more than a year, often relying on civilians to do the bulk of the fighting against the insurgents. Witnesses said it was vigilantes who recaptured the symbolically important northeast town of Chibok from Boko Haram at the weekend, with troops staying clear of the heavy fighting. Chibok was where the Islamists kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in April. Fifty-seven have escaped.

“We should not wait for soldiers to come, before they do the carnage will have been done,” Sanusi told the congregation. “Some of them drop their guns and flee.” The military has repeatedly been accused of leaving civilians defenceless against Boko Haram attacks and failing to respond to distress calls made in advance of raids. While Sanusi’s comments were similar to those made by President Goodluck Jonathan’s critics, they may feed added resentment towards the government because the Emir of Kano is expected to stay above the political fray.

Days after Jonathan sacked him from the Central Bank, Sanusi told AFP that the president was a “simple” man who had been misled and manipulated by incompetent advisors. Officially, Sanusi is the number two Islamic cleric in Nigeria, home to more than 80 million Muslims. But many consider the Emir of Kano to be more influential than the Sultan of Sokoto, who is the country’s top Islamic leader.

“FG is Winning the War against Boko Haram” – Reuben Abati on Al-Jazeera’s The Stream

It’s been a bloody year in northern Nigeria after series of fatal attacks, allegedly by Boko Haram, that have killed more than 300 Nigerians this year alone.

And while on Al-Jazeera's widely watched interactive programme, "The Stream" tonight, Nigeria's Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati defended FG's activities against Boko Haram, saying the Federal Government is winning the war against terrorism.

Abati was on the programme with:

  • Aminu Gamawa @AminuGamawa (Coordinator, Harvard Law School Graduate Forum aminugamawa.com)
  • Ahmad Zannah Khalifa (Senator, Borno State)
  • Michael Sodipo, Founder, Peace Initiative Network
  • and Babatunde Rosanwo
According to Abati:
“The government is winning the war against Boko Haram. The violence has reduced compared to the situation a year ago. Nigerians go to church with fear and trepidation every Sunday but that does not happen anymore.”
However, reacting to Reuben Abati’s statement, Rosanwo said
“the government must come down to the level of its citizens; they are the ones that are being killed. The government is definitely not winning the war against Boko Haram.”

Senator Khalifa agreed with Rosanwo saying the government has failed in protecting the lives and property of citizens in the affected areas. He put holes in Abati’s argument saying the insurgents are within the community, a notion  which is contrary to the official stance of the government which suggests that the Islamic militant sect adopts a cross-border attack strategy.

Rosanwo stated that the president needs to show some empathy to the victims of Boko Haram in Yobe, Borno and Bauchi by paying them a visit instead of sitting put in Abuja.

“You need to stop this centenary nonsense,” he said. “How can you celebrate when forty three kids were killed? What stops Mr. President from visiting Borno,” he asked rhetorically.

Abati, however, countered saying citizens, especially a serving senator should be careful not to make statements that are capable of demoralising the troops fighting against insurgents, he assured Nigerians of President Jonathan's commitment to the security of every citizen.

Will bring you the video once The Stream publishes it.
