Nigerian Army recaptures Chibok town

The Nigeria Army has recaptured Chibok town from Boko Haram Islamic militants. The town was where more than 200 Nigerian school girls were abducted back in April 2014.

Army's spokesman, Gen. Olajide Olaleye confirmed that mop-up operations are on going and that the town is now secure. Sources have said the operation was undertaken in conjunction with local vigilantes known as Civilian Joint Task Force. The source confirmed to AFP that "the local vigilantes fought inside the town while army soldiers stayed outside the town to mop up the insurgents trying to escape."

Chibok town had fallen into Islamic militants hands on Thursday after a battle with the army lasting several hours. Boko Haram have seized more than 20 towns and villages in the northeast of Nigeria in recent months.
