News In Brief On Thursday


Good morning! Here is the news in brief.
1. Report says six persons, including two female suicide bombers were killed in Kano on Wednesday when series of bombs exploded near the popular Kanti Kwari Textile Market, along Ibrahim Taiwo Road. It was further gathered that nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
2. In a new letter to the APC delegates, former Head of State and Presidential aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, General Mohammadu Buhari has said that his ambition to govern the country was sincerely informed by his desire to return Nigeria to the path of peace. He pledged a new Nigeria where Christians and Muslims would be secure and safe to practice their respective religions if elected.

3. Former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili has denied media reports suggesting that she was Obasanjo’s mistress. While denying the report that emanated from a photo she took with Obasanjo at his book launch, the former Minister said that Obasanjo merely gave her a “boisterous greeting” and nothing else. She said that only those with “impure hearts” would read another meaning to the greeting.
4. A Federal Capital Territory High Court judge, Justice Valentine Ashi, on Wednesday directed security agents, including the police and operatives of the Department of State Service, to confiscate Obasanjo’s newly launched book, ‘’My Watch’’. According to the judge, the publication of the book contravened the earlier court order restraining its publication.
5. A former leader of the Niger-Delta Militant, David Owhegbe, has issued a two- week ultimatum to the Special Adviser to the President on Amnesty, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, asking him to include his members in the documentation and integration into Phase Three of the amnesty programme. He said he will mobilise his men to attack oil installations in Delta State if the ultimatum is not met.
6. In a convention that ran into Thursday morning, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ratified the the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2015 election under its platform. Jonathan, in his acceptance speech however declared his Vice, Namadi Sambo as his running mate.
7. Former President, Olusegun obasanjo and Ebonyi state Governor, Martin Elechi were conspicuously absent from the PDP convention that ended in Abuja this morning. Report says their absence may not be unrelated with their anger over the way things are being done in the party.
8. Post-graduate students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, yesterday embarked on a protest against the University management over hike in their tuition fees. They described the increase of the fees from N65,000 to N145,000 as outrageous. The office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ben Ozumba was barricaded by the over 200 protesting students.
9. A Delta State High Court sitting in Warri, on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced Pastor Glory Okeoghene Abrefera and Reverend Vincent Okpogu to seven (7) years imprisonment each for duping depositors of over N32million. The two clergymen were nabbed after conniving to deceive some members of the public into investing in Mustard Seed Micro Investment Limited, where they were defrauded.
10. The impeached Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adewale Omirin, has proceeded to the Federal High Court in Lagos, asking the court to restrain the Assembly from further carrying on with any form of legislative activity pending when a suit they filed in protest of their impeachment is determined.
